Cryoprecipitate is a blood product derived from fresh frozen plasma. It is obtained by thawing plasma at a controlled low temperature (1-6°C) and then separating the precipitate that forms. This precipitate is rich in certain plasma proteins, most notably fibrinogen, von Willebrand factor, and Factor VIII. These components are essential for blood clotting.

The primary use of cryoprecipitate is to treat bleeding disorders characterized by a deficiency in these specific clotting factors. It is frequently administered to patients with hemophilia A, who have a lack of Factor VIII, and to those with von Willebrand disease, where the von Willebrand factor is deficient or dysfunctional. It can also be used to correct hypofibrinogenemia, a condition of low fibrinogen levels, which can occur in severe liver disease or disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).

Cryoprecipitate is typically transfused to patients experiencing active bleeding or who are undergoing invasive procedures where significant bleeding is anticipated. The dosage and frequency of administration depend on the specific clinical indication, the patient's weight, and the desired level of clotting factor correction. It is a readily available and effective treatment option for managing a range of bleeding complications.
