Crustforming is the process by which a distinct outer layer, or crust, develops on a material, surface, or body as a result of chemical, physical, or biological processes. Crusts can vary in mineral composition, texture, thickness, and adhesion, and they often alter the surface’s properties, such as permeability, strength, or appearance.

Common mechanisms include drying and dehydration that leave a desiccated surface; oxidation and other surface reactions that build oxide or carbonate skins on metals and minerals; cooling and crystallization that form solid skins during solidification of melts; deposition of minerals from fluids at interfaces; and biological or chemical polymerization that builds organic crusts. Environmental conditions—temperature, humidity, pH, salinity, and the presence of catalysts or inhibitors—strongly influence crust quality.

Geology and planetary science: crust formation refers to the solid outer layer of a planet or to crusts formed by processes such as volcanism and sedimentation. In soils, surface crusts form by cementation and clay translocation, affecting infiltration and erosion. Materials science: oxide scales form on metals under high temperature; ceramics can develop crusts during firing. Food science: crusts develop on bread, pastries, and cheeses, where surface drying and heat drive Maillard reactions and crust formation.

Implications: crusts can protect underlying material from degradation or, conversely, act as barriers to diffusion and sites for fracture. Understanding crust formation informs corrosion prevention, soil and erosion management, and food texture control.
