Crossglossary is a term used to describe a centralized, cross-domain glossary resource that links terms across multiple glossaries to enable interoperability and consistent terminology usage. By collecting terms from different domains and languages, a crossglossary supports crosswalks that map equivalents, distinctions, and hierarchical relations, reducing ambiguity in multilingual content and data exchange.

Typically, a crossglossary assigns unique identifiers to terms, records definitions, language, domain, part of speech, and usage notes. It stores cross-language mappings, synonyms, and related terms, as well as cross-references to the source glossaries. Advanced implementations include semantic relations such as broader and narrower terms, disambiguation notes, and provenance metadata to track who added or modified entries.

Common use cases include localization and internationalization, where consistency of key terms is essential across products; standards and regulatory contexts that require harmonized terminology; and large-scale information systems that integrate diverse datasets from multiple domains, such as scientific libraries or legal repositories. A simple example is linking the term bank in finance with a distinct term for riverbank in geography to clarify meaning in context.

Challenges include managing polysemy and domain drift, aligning different glossary structures, ensuring data quality, governance, and licensing constraints when integrating multiple sources. Sustained maintenance, versioning, and clear provenance are important to preserve reliability over time.
