Cradle to Cradle design is an approach to the design of manufactured products that mimics natural processes. It is based on the idea that all materials should be able to be continuously cycled in healthy closed-loop systems. This means that at the end of a product's life, its components are either safely biodegraded into the environment or are re-purposed into new products of equal or higher value. The concept was developed by architect William McDonough and chemist Michael Braungart and is outlined in their book, Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things.
