Covalentketjut, often translated as covalent chains, refers to the fundamental structural units found in certain types of solid materials. These structures are characterized by a repeating arrangement of atoms linked together by strong covalent bonds. Unlike ionic crystals which are held together by electrostatic attractions between oppositely charged ions, or metallic lattices formed by a sea of delocalized electrons, covalent chains are formed by the sharing of electrons between neighboring atoms.

In a covalent chain, each atom typically forms covalent bonds with a fixed number of other atoms, creating a continuous, one-dimensional network. This network can extend indefinitely in one direction. The strength and directionality of covalent bonds lead to rigid structures with high melting and boiling points. Examples of materials exhibiting covalent chain structures include certain forms of silicon carbide and some polymers where the backbone consists of covalently bonded atoms.
