Costwhile is a neologism used in discussions of cost accounting and operations management to describe the rate at which costs are incurred during the execution of a task or process. The term combines cost with while to emphasize cost accumulation over a time interval.

Definition and calculation: Costwhile is typically expressed as currency per unit of time (for example, dollars per hour). It can be estimated for a defined activity by dividing the total cost incurred over a time span by the duration of that span. In some contexts it may refer to the instantaneous cost rate during a continuous process. This allows comparison of processes with different durations on a time-normalized basis.

Applications: The metric is used to compare efficiency across processes, support time-based budgeting, and facilitate ongoing optimization. It complements other measures such as total cost, unit cost, or cost-to-complete, offering insight into how quickly expenses accrue relative to time.

Examples: In manufacturing, a production line that incurs $12,000 over 80 hours has a costwhile of $150 per hour. In software deployment, costwhile can be estimated from hourly cloud charges during the deployment window, helping to assess cost efficiency of the operation.
