The name *Cosmeticsuchus* translates roughly to "beautiful crocodile," derived from the Greek words *kosmetikos* (meaning "beautiful" or "ornamental") and *suchus* (referring to crocodiles). This genus is notable for its distinctive skull morphology, which includes a long, narrow snout and a series of small, tooth-like structures along the jaw edges, possibly used for filtering or straining small prey.

Fossil remains of *Cosmeticsuchus* have been discovered primarily in what is now the southwestern United States, particularly in the Chinle Formation of Arizona. The most well-known species, *Cosmeticsuchus maximus*, is characterized by its elongated skull and slender body, suggesting an adaptation to a specialized feeding niche. Unlike many other thalattosaurs, which had broader snouts for crushing shells, *Cosmeticsuchus* likely relied on a different hunting strategy, possibly targeting fish or other small marine organisms.
