Cosetbased (coset-based) refers to methods, algorithms, or viewpoints that use cosets of a subgroup as the central organizing construct in mathematics, particularly in group theory. A coset is a form gH or Hg, where H is a subgroup of a group G, and these cosets partition G. The number of cosets is the index [G:H], and when H is normal, the left cosets form the quotient group G/H.

Coset-based approaches seek to reduce computations by working with coset representatives and the coset structure rather than individual group elements. This often involves constructing a coset table, a coset graph, or other representations that record how generators act on cosets. Such representations facilitate efficient enumeration, membership testing, and the construction of permutation representations.

Common coset-based algorithms include the Todd-Coxeter coset enumeration, which determines the order of a finite group and the coset structure with respect to a subgroup, and the Schreier-Sims algorithm, used to build compact permutation representations of permutation groups. Other methods use cosets to perform orbit-stabilizer computations and explore subgroup lattices.

Coset-based techniques are central to computational group theory and have applications in algebra, geometry, and chemistry, where symmetry groups are analyzed. They can be efficient when the subgroup index is manageable, but may become impractical for large indices or poorly chosen subgroups, as the coset structure can grow rapidly.
