Cooperatieve, often shortened to co-op, refers to an enterprise or organization that is owned and governed by its members, who may be customers, workers, suppliers, or a combination of these groups. The core principle is democratic control, typically expressed as one member, one vote, despite varying levels of investment. Though the term is derived from the English word cooperative and is widely used in Dutch-speaking contexts, the concept has a global presence spanning agriculture, finance, retail, and housing.

Historically, the cooperative movement emerged in the early 19th century in Europe as a response to industrialization and market inequalities. The Rochdale Pioneers in England are credited with establishing the first set of guiding principles in 1844, which include voluntary and open membership, democratic member control, and the distribution of surplus among members. Modern cooperatives often operate under national or international legal frameworks such as the U.S. Federal Cooperative Act or the EU Directive on Consumer Cooperatives.

Cooperatives fall into several broad categories. Consumer cooperatives are formed by individuals who purchase goods or services; worker cooperatives are owned and self-managed by employees; producer cooperatives enable producers to pool resources for marketing or procurement; and housing cooperatives provide residents with collective ownership of residential real estate. Hybrid models also exist, blending elements from multiple categories.

The benefits of cooperatives include enhanced member participation, equitable profit-sharing, and resilience to market volatility. Critics argue that growth can be limited by the need for consensus and that profit retention can reduce reinvestment. Nonetheless, cooperatives remain a significant and growing component of the global economy, embodying principles of social solidarity and democratic governance.
