Contrast strength, or contraststerkte in Dutch, denotes the degree to which differences in luminance or color are perceptible in an image, scene, or tissue. It is a key parameter in fields such as photography, display technology, medical imaging, and vision science, influencing readability, depth, and perceived detail.

Measurements of contrast strength vary by context. In imaging and displays, it is commonly described by contrast ratio, the comparison between maximum and minimum luminance. For grayscale content, Michelson contrast is defined as (Lmax − Lmin)/(Lmax + Lmin), while Weber contrast is (Ltarget − Lbackground)/Lbackground. In medical imaging, contrast strength relates to how well a contrast agent enhances differentiation between structures, often quantified by enhancement percentage or contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR).

Factors that affect contrast strength include illumination and ambient light, the dynamic range and calibration of sensors or displays, viewing distance, color gamut, and image processing. Higher ambient light or a limited dynamic range can reduce perceived contrast, while appropriate calibration and processing can enhance it.
