Contexteducation is an approach to teaching and learning that centers knowledge and skills within real-world contexts, students’ lived experiences, and their social environments. It aims to make learning relevant, support transfer of learning to practice, and prepare learners for active participation in their communities and workplaces.

Core principles include that learning is situated and constructed through authentic tasks; knowledge is inseparable from context; learning is social and collaborative; assessment emphasizes real-world performance; curricula are responsive to local concerns and diverse perspectives; and student agency is encouraged.

Practices encompass contextualized instruction, case-based and problem-based learning, project-based learning, place-based education, service learning, and internships. Teachers connect curricula to local issues, use community experts, and design tasks that mirror professional or civic challenges.

The approach draws on situated learning theory (Lave and Wenger) and constructivist and socio-cultural perspectives (Vygotsky). It argues that knowledge gains arise through participation in meaningful activities embedded in authentic contexts.

Contexteducation is used in K-12, higher education, and vocational training to support interdisciplinary exploration and practical understanding, but it requires resources, partnerships, and professional development. Challenges include aligning with standardized curricula and assessment, ensuring equitable access to authentic experiences, and maintaining coherence when contexts vary.
