Consumption expenditure, or consumer spending, refers to outlays by households on goods and services for present use. In national income accounting, it is usually denoted as C and is the largest component of gross domestic product in many economies. It includes spending on durable goods (such as cars and appliances), nondurable goods (such as food and clothing), and services (such as housing services, healthcare, and education). Purchases of new housing are typically treated separately as part of investment, not consumption.

Measurement and scope: In many countries, consumption expenditure is recorded as personal consumption expenditures (PCE) within GDP. Real consumption adjusts for changes in the price level, providing a measure of quantity consumed over time, while nominal consumption uses current prices. Data are often collected from household surveys, retail sales, and business and government accounts, with methodological differences across countries.

Determinants: Real income and disposable income, wealth and asset prices, credit conditions, interest rates, taxes, and expectations about the future influence consumption. Theories such as the life-cycle model and the permanent income hypothesis describe how households smooth consumption over time in response to fluctuating income. Consumer confidence and demographics also shape short- and long-run spending patterns.

Economic role: Consumption expenditure is a primary driver of aggregate demand and business cycle dynamics. Policy measures—fiscal transfers, tax changes, and monetary policy affecting borrowing costs—often target stabilization of consumption to support economic growth or curb inflation.

Global variation: The share and composition of consumption within GDP vary across countries due to income levels, cultural norms, and institutional factors, but it generally remains a cornerstone of macroeconomic analysis.
