Component harmonics refer to the integer multiples of a fundamental frequency that occur in an electronic circuit when it is subjected to a periodic signal. These harmonics are an inherent property of waveforms, particularly those with a non-sinusoidal shape. In electronic engineering, component harmonics are undesirable and can cause problems in the operation of electronic devices.

When a periodic signal flows through a component, such as a resistor, capacitor, or inductor, it causes the component's current-voltage relationship to be modified. This results in a waveform shape change that includes additional frequencies, known as harmonics. The first harmonic, also known as the fundamental frequency, is the primary frequency of the input signal. Subsequent harmonics, or overtones, are integer multiples of the fundamental frequency and occur at time intervals that are multiples of the fundamental period.

Component harmonics can have various effects on electronic circuits. High-order harmonics can cause electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio-frequency interference (RFI) that disrupts the normal operation of devices. They can also affect the accuracy of signals processed by the circuit, leading to distortion. In power electronics, component harmonics can cause the voltage and current to be distorted, leading to efficiency losses and overheating of circuit components.

To minimize component harmonics, electronic circuits are designed to operate at a frequency where the input signal is far from an integer multiple of the component's resonance frequency. Additionally, filter techniques, such as capacitors and inductors, can be used to reduce the amplitude of higher-order harmonics and mitigate their effects on circuit operation.
