complexin2

Complexin2, also known as CPLX2, is a protein encoded by the CPLX2 gene. It is a member of the complexin family of proteins, which play a crucial role in regulating neurotransmitter release at synapses. Complexins are small, helical proteins that interact with the SNARE complex, a machinery responsible for the fusion of synaptic vesicles with the presynaptic membrane.

There are four known complexin isoforms in mammals: complexin1, complexin2, complexin3, and complexin4. Complexin2 is widely expressed in the brain and other tissues. It functions as a clamp on the SNARE complex, preventing spontaneous fusion of vesicles and thus reducing basal neurotransmitter release. However, upon arrival of an action potential, complexin2 is thought to promote synchronous neurotransmitter release by facilitating the final steps of SNARE complex zippering and fusion.

Research suggests that complexin2 has a role in synaptic plasticity and learning and memory. Studies have indicated that alterations in complexin2 levels or function can affect synaptic transmission and neuronal excitability. Its precise mechanisms of action and its involvement in various neurological processes are areas of ongoing investigation. The CPLX2 gene is located on chromosome 17 in humans.
