commutazione

Commutation, or commutazione, is the act of exchanging the order of operations or signals. It describes whether changing the order yields the same result, a notion used in mathematics, physics, and engineering. The term also appears as commutator in operator theory and as a mechanism in certain machines.

In mathematics, an operation is commutative if a ∘ b = b ∘ a for all elements. Addition and multiplication of ordinary numbers are commutative; subtraction and division generally are not, and matrix multiplication is noncommutative in general. Many algebraic structures study the extent to which operations commute.

In physics and quantum mechanics, the commutator [A,B] = AB − BA measures the failure of two observables to commute. If [A,B] = 0, they can be simultaneously determined; if not, measurements affect each other. The canonical example is position and momentum, which do not commute, reflecting the uncertainty principle.

In electrical engineering, commutation refers to switching current in direct-current machines. A commutator and stationary brushes reverse current in the rotor windings to maintain torque in one direction. This is a mechanical form of commutation, distinct from mathematical commutativity but related in describing order changes.

Originating from Latin mutare, commutare enters science to denote exchanging order or components. It is used across disciplines to describe symmetry, measurement, and control processes.
