commonProtoFinnic
CommonProtoFinnic is the reconstructed ancestor of the Finnic branch of the Uralic language family. It is not directly attested; its features are inferred through the comparative method from the attested Finnic languages, such as Finnish, Estonian, Karelian, Veps, Livonian, and Ingrian. In the literature the term commonProtoFinnic is sometimes used interchangeably with Proto-Finnic, or to designate an earlier stage from which Finnic languages split. Regardless of naming, the concept aims to describe the shared core that preceded internal diversification.
