Coilbuilding is the practice of designing, winding, and installing coils in rebuildable atomizers used in certain e-cigarettes. The goal is to create coils with a controllable electrical resistance that heat quickly and evenly to vaporize e-liquid. Builders select wire, wind it around a mandrel or jig, and thread wicking material through the coil before installation into the atomizer.

Common wire types include Kanthal A1, Nichrome, Stainless Steel, and nickel alloys used for temperature-control vaping. Wire gauges vary; thinner wires have higher resistance. Builders often construct more complex coils, such as claptons or fused-claptons, to increase surface area and adjust heat distribution. Coil builds are characterized by their resistance, typically measured in ohms, and by their recommended power range.

Coil configurations range from simple round-wire coils to multi-wire constructions like claptons and fused coils. The choice affects ramp-up time, flavor, and vapor production. The coil is installed in the atomizer, and wicking material is threaded through to keep the coil saturated with liquid.
