coforms
Coforms, also known as coprostanols, are a group of sterols found in the feces of mammals, particularly those consuming a diet rich in cholesterol. They are derived from cholesterol through microbial action in the digestive tract. Chemically, coforms are saturated sterols, meaning they lack the double bonds found in their precursor, cholesterol. The most common coforms are coprostanol and epicoprostanol, which differ in the stereochemistry at the C5 position.
The presence and concentration of coforms in feces are often studied as indicators of fecal sterol excretion
In addition to their role in fecal sterol studies, coforms have also been explored in forensic science.
