The coccyx, commonly known as the tailbone, is the final section of the vertebral column in humans and some other primates. It is located at the very end of the spine, below the sacrum. The coccyx is typically composed of three to five fused vertebrae. Its precise number can vary between individuals.

The coccyx serves as an attachment point for several muscles, ligaments, and tendons of the pelvic floor, which play roles in bowel and bladder control, as well as sexual function. While it has no weight-bearing function in upright posture, it can act as a crucial contact point when sitting.

Injuries to the coccyx, such as fractures or dislocations, can occur due to falls or direct trauma to the area. This can lead to a condition known as coccydynia, characterized by pain in the tailbone region, which may be exacerbated by sitting. The coccyx is a remnant of the tail that was present in our evolutionary ancestors.
