Coating adhesive refers to adhesive formulations used within coating technology to promote bonding of a coating layer to a substrate, or to bond successive coating layers. These adhesives may be delivered as primers, bond coats, or adhesion promoters integrated into the coating system. They are designed to improve interfacial adhesion, cohesiveness of the coating film, and resistance to environmental exposure.

Common chemistries include epoxy, polyurethane, and acrylic resins used as primers or promoters, as well as silane coupling agents that enhance substrate compatibility. Systems may be solvent-based or water-based, with some offering two-component or UV-curable formulations. Their function is to improve wetting, chemical compatibility, and crosslinking with the main coating to form a durable film.

Applications span architectural and protective coatings on metal, wood, concrete, and plastics; automotive primers; corrosion-inhibiting bond coats; and electronic or industrial coatings where strong adhesion is essential. Performance indicators include adhesion strength (peel and pull-off), film formation, cure time, flexibility, chemical and UV resistance, and compatibility with pigments and topcoats.

Selecting a coating adhesive involves substrate condition, surface energy, roughness, the coating system, processing conditions, and environmental constraints such as VOC limits and safety regulations. Proper handling, ventilation, and testing, including standardized adhesion measurements, help ensure reliable bonding and long service life.
