Cloning methods encompass a range of techniques used to create genetically identical copies of biological entities. In molecular biology, gene cloning is a fundamental process that involves isolating a specific gene or DNA fragment and producing multiple copies of it. This is often achieved by inserting the gene of interest into a vector, such as a plasmid, which is then introduced into a host organism, typically bacteria. As the host reproduces, it replicates the vector along with the inserted gene, thereby generating numerous copies.

Another important area is reproductive cloning, which aims to create a whole organism that is genetically identical to a donor. The most common technique for this is Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT). In SCNT, the nucleus from a somatic cell (any body cell other than a sperm or egg cell) of the donor organism is transferred into an enucleated egg cell (an egg cell that has had its own nucleus removed). This reconstructed egg cell is then stimulated to divide and develop into an embryo, which can be implanted into a surrogate mother to grow into a cloned organism.

Therapeutic cloning, also utilizing SCNT, focuses on creating embryonic stem cells that are genetically matched to a patient. These stem cells have the potential to differentiate into various cell types and could be used to generate tissues or organs for transplantation, thereby avoiding immune rejection. Unlike reproductive cloning, the embryo created in therapeutic cloning is not intended to develop into a complete organism. The ethical implications surrounding cloning methods, particularly reproductive and therapeutic cloning, remain a significant topic of discussion and debate globally.
