Claudicatio, often referred to as intermittent claudication, is a symptom characterized by muscle pain or cramping that occurs during physical activity, such as walking, and is relieved by rest. This discomfort typically affects the legs, particularly the calves, but can also occur in the thighs or buttocks. The pain is a direct result of insufficient blood flow to the muscles when they are working harder. During exercise, muscles demand more oxygen, and when arteries are narrowed or blocked, the blood supply cannot meet this increased need, leading to oxygen deprivation and the sensation of pain.
The most common cause of claudicatio is peripheral artery disease (PAD), a condition where the arteries that
