Clarifier tanks, also known as settling tanks or sedimentation tanks, are essential components in various industrial and wastewater treatment processes. Their primary function is to remove suspended solids from a liquid by allowing them to settle out of suspension via gravity. This process is known as sedimentation or clarification.

The design of a clarifier tank typically involves a large, open vessel where the incoming liquid is introduced at a low velocity. This reduced flow rate encourages denser solid particles to sink to the bottom of the tank, forming a sludge layer. Lighter suspended matter that may float to the surface is also managed, often through skimming mechanisms. The clarified liquid, now with a significantly reduced solid content, overflows from the top of the tank.

Clarifier tanks are widely used in municipal water treatment plants to remove turbidity and other impurities from raw water sources. In industrial settings, they are employed in processes such as mining for mineral separation, food and beverage production for product purification, and chemical manufacturing for waste stream treatment. The efficiency of a clarifier tank depends on factors like flow rate, tank geometry, and the characteristics of the suspended solids. Regular removal of the accumulated sludge is crucial for maintaining optimal performance.
