Cigarrièrers were artisans who specialized in the production of cigars. This craft, which reached its peak in the 19th and early 20th centuries, involved a meticulous process of selecting, processing, and rolling tobacco leaves into finished cigars. The skill of a cigarrièr was highly valued, as the quality of the cigar depended directly on their expertise.

The process typically began with the aging and fermentation of tobacco leaves. Once ready, the cigarrièr would carefully select the wrapper, binder, and filler leaves, each contributing distinct characteristics to the final product. The filler leaves, forming the core of the cigar, were bunched together. A binder leaf was then wrapped around the filler to hold it in shape. Finally, the wrapper leaf, the outermost layer, was expertly applied in a spiral motion to create a smooth and even finish.

Skilled cigarrièrers could produce a significant number of cigars per day, with the speed and precision of their hand movements being a hallmark of their trade. They often worked in factories, but independent cigarrièrers also existed, particularly in regions with a strong tobacco culture. The craft demanded a keen sense of smell and touch to assess the tobacco's quality and moisture content. While the traditional role of the cigarrièr has largely been supplanted by automated production methods, the appreciation for handcrafted cigars and the legacy of these artisans persists.
