Cicatrización, also known as cicatrization, is the process by which living tissue repairs and replaces damaged or destroyed tissue. This process is essential for healing wounds and maintaining the integrity of the body. The stages of cicatrization typically include hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and maturation.

Hemostasis is the first stage, where blood vessels constrict to stop bleeding, and platelets and clotting factors form a clot to seal the wound. Inflammation follows, as immune cells and proteins migrate to the site to remove debris and initiate tissue repair. Proliferation is the stage where fibroblasts, a type of cell, migrate to the wound site and produce extracellular matrix, the scaffolding for new tissue growth. The final stage, maturation, involves the remodeling of the extracellular matrix and the organization of collagen fibers, leading to the formation of a strong scar.

The quality of the scar depends on various factors, including the type of tissue damaged, the individual's age and health, and the environment at the wound site. Keloids, for example, are excessive scar tissue that forms above the surface of the skin, often in response to injury. Hypertrophic scars, on the other hand, are raised and red, but do not extend beyond the borders of the original wound.
