Christenings are ceremonies within Christian churches in which a person is initiated into the Christian faith through baptism, most commonly for infants. The term christening is often synonymous with baptism in many traditions, though some churches reserve christening for the naming portion that accompanies the rite.

Ritual elements typically include water poured on or applied to the head, the recitation of the Trinity, baptismal vows, and the invocation of the Holy Spirit. In infant ceremonies, parents and godparents (sponsors) undertake promises to raise the child in the Christian faith. Additional symbols may include a white garment to signify purity, a baptismal candle lit from the Easter candle, and, in some traditions, the use of chrism oil.

Practices vary by denomination. Catholic, Orthodox, and many mainline Protestant churches teach that baptism is a decisive sacrament or a means of grace that initiates the believer into the church; infants are commonly baptized. Other Protestant groups practice believer’s baptism, performing the rite for those who profess personal faith, sometimes at an older age. Some churches may combine the ceremony with a naming component.

In many places, baptisms are documented in church records, and families may mark the occasion with a family gathering or reception. The ceremony serves as both a religious rite and a public acknowledgment of a child’s entry into the faith community.
