Chinampas are a Mesoamerican agricultural technique characterized by artificial islands built on the shallow lakebeds of Xochimilco, Mexico City. These highly productive man-made fields were a cornerstone of the Aztec economy and allowed for intensive cultivation of crops like maize, beans, and chilies. The construction of chinampas involved layering mud and vegetation from the lake bottom, creating fertile, water-retentive plots. Willow trees were often planted around the edges to help stabilize the soil and prevent erosion. The constant availability of water, coupled with the rich soil, enabled multiple harvests per year, supporting a large population. This innovative system demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of hydrology and soil management by pre-Columbian civilizations. While the scale of chinampa farming has diminished over time due to urbanization and changes in water management, the traditional practices are still maintained in some areas of Xochimilco and are recognized as a significant cultural and agricultural heritage.
