A chimaeroid is a type of compound organism, specifically a colonial animal, belonging to the phylum Cnidaria. These organisms are characterized by their polymorphic nature, meaning the individual zooids within the colony are specialized for different functions. A chimaeroid colony is essentially a single, complex unit formed by the budding and growth of genetically identical individuals.

The most prominent chimaeroid groups are siphonophores, which include well-known examples like the Portuguese man o' war. These colonies are often pelagic, drifting in the ocean currents. Within a siphonophore colony, zooids are modified into specialized structures. These can include pneumatophores for buoyancy, gastrozooids for feeding, dactylozooids for defense and prey capture, and gonozooids for reproduction.

The arrangement and integration of these zooids are highly specific to the chimaeroid species. While appearing as a single entity, the colony functions as a coordinated whole, with different zooids contributing to survival and reproduction. This specialization allows chimaeroids to occupy diverse ecological niches and exploit resources effectively in marine environments.
