Chikungunyavirus is a virus belonging to the family Flaviviridae, which also includes the dengue virus, yellow fever virus, and Zika virus. It is transmitted primarily by the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, particularly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. The virus is named after the Chikungunya disease, which it causes.

Chikungunyavirus is an RNA virus with a positive-sense single-stranded genome. It has a diameter of about 70 nanometers and is enclosed in an icosahedral capsid. The virus is highly contagious and can be spread through infected mosquito bites, blood transfusions, and from mother to child during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Chikungunya disease, caused by the chikungunyavirus, is characterized by a sudden onset of fever, joint pain, and rash. The symptoms typically begin 3-7 days after the bite of an infected mosquito and can last for several days to a few weeks. In severe cases, the disease can lead to arthritis, which can be debilitating and persistent.

There is no specific treatment for chikungunya disease, and management focuses on relieving symptoms through rest, hydration, and pain relievers. Vaccines are not currently available, but research is ongoing to develop effective prevention and treatment strategies. Prevention efforts include mosquito control measures, such as eliminating standing water where mosquitoes breed, and personal protective measures, such as using insect repellent and wearing protective clothing.
