A charioteer is the driver of a chariot, a light two-wheeled vehicle drawn by horses or other draft animals. In antiquity charioteers were professional drivers who served in military, ceremonial, and athletic contexts as well as in sport. In warfare, chariots provided a mobile platform for archers and melee fighters and could disrupt enemy formations, though they were vulnerable to rough terrain and countermeasures. The driver needed to command the horses with reins and a whip and to coordinate with a warrior or archer who fought from the chariot’s platform.
