Charge separation refers to the process by which positive and negative electric charges become spatially divided within a system. This division can occur through various physical mechanisms, leading to the creation of an electric dipole or a more complex charge distribution. In a neutral object, the total amount of positive charge is equal to the total amount of negative charge. Charge separation disrupts this balance, resulting in regions with a net positive charge and regions with a net negative charge.

One common mechanism for charge separation is induction, where a charged object brought near a conductor causes free charges within the conductor to redistribute. For instance, if a positively charged rod is brought near a neutral metal sphere, electrons in the sphere will be attracted to the side closest to the rod, leaving the opposite side with a net positive charge. Another method is friction, as seen in the triboelectric effect, where rubbing two different materials together can transfer electrons from one to the other, creating opposite charges on each surface. Photodissociation, the breaking of a molecule by light, can also lead to charge separation if the resulting fragments are ionized. Ionization, the process of creating ions by removing or adding electrons, inherently involves charge separation. Understanding charge separation is fundamental in many areas of physics, including electrostatics, dielectrics, and the behavior of materials under electric fields.
