A château, plural châteaux, is a type of French country house or castle. The term château is French and derives from the Latin word castellum, meaning a fenced enclosure or, later, a fortress. In France, the word château can refer to a variety of buildings, from medieval castles to more modern residences. Historically, châteaux often served as fortifications and residences for noble families or royalty.

The architectural styles of châteaux vary greatly depending on the period of construction. Early châteaux, such as those built during the medieval period, often featured strong defensive elements like moats, towers, and thick walls. As the centuries progressed, particularly during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, the emphasis shifted towards more elaborate and comfortable residences. This led to the development of grand estates with spacious rooms, ornate decorations, and extensive gardens.

The Loire Valley in France is particularly renowned for its abundance of châteaux, many of which are now UNESCO World Heritage sites. These include famous examples like Chambord, Chenonceau, and Blois, which showcase the evolution of French architecture and aristocratic life. Today, many châteaux are preserved as historical monuments, museums, or are privately owned, some still serving as residences while others are open to the public for tours and events. The term château is also used informally in English-speaking countries to refer to a grand house or estate, especially one with a French architectural influence.
