Cerumenproduktion refers to the biological process by which the human ear produces earwax, also known scientifically as cerumen. This waxy substance is secreted by specialized glands located in the outer third of the ear canal, specifically the sebaceous glands and ceruminous glands. These glands are modified sweat glands.

The production of cerumen is a normal and essential bodily function. It serves several protective roles for the ear. Firstly, it acts as a natural lubricant and moisturizer for the ear canal, preventing the skin from becoming too dry and flaky. Secondly, cerumen has a sticky consistency that traps dust, debris, dead skin cells, and foreign particles, preventing them from reaching the eardrum. Thirdly, earwax possesses antibacterial and antifungal properties, helping to ward off infections within the ear canal.

The composition of cerumen varies among individuals, influenced by genetics. It is primarily made up of fatty acids, cholesterol, alcohols, and squalene. The color and consistency can range from pale yellow and moist to dark brown and dry.

The ear canal is typically self-cleaning. The natural movements of the jaw, such as chewing and talking, help to migrate the cerumen outwards from the eardrum towards the outer ear, where it can then fall out or be easily removed. Excessive or impacted cerumen can sometimes lead to hearing loss, tinnitus, or discomfort, and may require medical intervention for removal.
