The flag may be set to true when the certificate’s private key participates in a operation such as signing data, establishing a TLS session, or issuing a subordinate certificate. Some implementations record the type of operation and the time of usage to support auditing and policy enforcement. When the private key has not yet been used, the flag remains false.

Interpretation of certificateused can vary by context. In some environments, it signifies that the certificate was presented in a session or handshake. In others, it means the certificate has been used to sign data or to perform a certificate issuance. The concept is distinct from validity, revocation, or trust; a certificate can be valid and unused, or used and later revoked.
