Centrifugál is a term derived from the Latin words "centrum" meaning center and "fugere" meaning to flee. It describes a force that appears to act on a body moving in a circular path, pushing it away from the center of rotation. While often referred to as a force, in physics, it's more accurately understood as a consequence of inertia.

When an object is in circular motion, its velocity is constantly changing direction, even if its speed remains constant. This change in velocity requires a centripetal force, which is directed towards the center of the circle, to keep the object from moving in a straight line tangential to its path. The apparent outward force, the centrifugal force, is what an observer in the rotating frame of reference would perceive. This perceived force is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction to the centripetal force.

A common example is a person in a spinning amusement park ride. The ride applies a centripetal force to keep the person moving in a circle. From the person's perspective within the ride, they feel pushed outwards, which is the centrifugal effect. Another example is a car turning a corner; the friction between the tires and the road provides the centripetal force, while the occupants feel a tendency to slide outwards. Centrifugal force is a key concept in understanding rotational dynamics and is utilized in various applications, such as centrifuges used for separating substances.
