Core functions include indexing, search, facet navigation, filtering, and ranking, along with API access for programmatic querying. Catalog servers normally support data ingestion pipelines, validation rules, deduplication, versioning, and auditing to maintain data quality and traceability.

Architecture and tech: catalog servers are typically decoupled from the primary data stores that hold the items. They aggregate metadata from multiple sources, index it for fast search, and expose REST or GraphQL APIs. Common components include a search/indexing engine, a metadata store, and a caching layer.

Use cases include e-commerce product catalogs, library and museum catalogs, digital asset management, software package registries, and service catalogs in microservices environments (for discovery and governance). They enable users to browse with facets and filters and to obtain item details.

Standards, governance, and security: catalog data often follow metadata standards and schemas (for example, schema.org or Dublin Core in general contexts) and require authentication, authorization, and auditing.
