casebacked
Casebacked refers to a type of bookbinding where the cover boards are attached to the spine, creating a distinct rectangular shape. This method is distinct from perfect binding or saddle-stitching, where the pages are directly adhered or stapled to the cover. In case binding, the text block is first sewn or glued together, then a cover, typically made of thick cardboard and covered with cloth, paper, or leather, is prepared separately. The spine of the text block is then attached to the inside of the cover boards, resulting in a sturdy and durable book. This construction allows the book to lie flat more easily when opened, which is advantageous for reference books, textbooks, and other volumes that are frequently consulted. Casebound books are generally considered more premium and long-lasting than other binding types. The term "case" refers to the outer cover assembly.
