cascinale
A cascinale is a traditional rural building found primarily in the Lombardy region of Italy. These structures are characterized by their enclosed courtyard layout, often U-shaped or rectangular, which serves as a central working and living space for the farm. Typically, a cascinale comprises residential quarters, stables, barns, and storage areas, all arranged around this central courtyard. The architecture often features simple, functional design with thick stone or brick walls and tiled roofs. The enclosed nature of the cascinale provided a degree of self-sufficiency and protection for the farming community and their livestock. Over time, many cascinali have been renovated and repurposed, with some becoming private homes, agriturismo establishments, or cultural centers, while others remain active agricultural sites. The term itself is derived from "cascina," meaning farmhouse.
