A cartridge fuse, known in Swedish as a cartridgesäkring, is a type of electrical fuse designed to protect circuits from overcurrents. It consists of a metal wire or filament encased within a non-conductive tubular body, typically made of glass or ceramic. The ends of the fuse are fitted with metal caps or ferrules that provide electrical contact and allow the fuse to be inserted into a fuse holder.

When an excessive amount of current flows through the circuit, the fuse wire heats up due to its resistance. If the current exceeds the fuse's rated limit for a sufficient duration, the wire melts, breaking the electrical connection and interrupting the flow of current. This action prevents damage to electrical components and reduces the risk of fire.
