Cardreading is the practice of interpreting cards drawn from a deck to gain insight, guidance, or a sense of direction. While most commonly associated with tarot cards, cardreading also encompasses oracle decks, Lenormand cards, and sometimes playing cards. Readers consider symbolic imagery, numbers, suits, and the arrangement of the drawn cards to suggest meanings relevant to questions about relationships, work, health, or personal growth.

In practice, a reader selects a spread—an arrangement of cards that provides a framework for interpretation. Common spreads include single-card draws for quick answers, three-card layouts (past, present, future or situation, action, result), and larger patterns such as the Celtic Cross. Interpretations may rely on established card meanings from reference books, the reader’s intuition, or a combination of both. In tarot, the Major Arcana carries overarching themes, while the Minor Arcana (divided into suits) offers more situational details; reversed cards are sometimes read as opposite or nuanced meanings. Oracle decks can provide different symbolism and are often used for guidance rather than traditional tarot structure.

History and use of cardreading span many cultures. Cartomancy with playing cards and early tarot visuals date back several centuries, with modern tarot drawing significant interest through occult and spiritual movements in the 18th–20th centuries. Today, cardreading is practiced as entertainment, personal reflection, or spiritual guidance, with ethical considerations such as informed consent, confidentiality, and avoiding coercive influence. It remains a diverse and contested practice, reflecting a range of beliefs about meaning, fate, and agency.
