A cardiograph, also known as an electrocardiogram (ECG) or electrocardiograph, is a medical device used to record the electrical activity of the heart over a period of time. It is a non-invasive procedure that provides valuable information about the heart's rhythm and electrical activity. Cardiographs are commonly used in clinical settings to diagnose and monitor various cardiac conditions, including arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, and heart failure.

The ECG machine consists of several electrodes that are placed on the patient's skin to detect the electrical signals generated by the heart. These signals are then amplified and recorded on a graph, which displays the heart's electrical activity as a series of waves and intervals. The most common ECG leads include the standard limb leads (I, II, III, aVR, aVL, aVF) and the precordial leads (V1-V6).

Interpreting an ECG involves analyzing the shape, size, and timing of the waves and intervals. The most prominent waves are the P wave, which represents atrial depolarization; the QRS complex, which represents ventricular depolarization; and the T wave, which represents ventricular repolarization. Abnormalities in these waves and intervals can indicate various cardiac conditions.

Cardiographs are widely used in emergency medicine, cardiology, and general medicine. They are also used in sports medicine to monitor athletes' heart health and in research settings to study the heart's electrical activity. Advances in technology have led to the development of portable and wearable ECG devices, making cardiac monitoring more accessible and convenient.
