Cardinalitou, also known as cardinality, is a fundamental concept in mathematics, particularly in set theory. It refers to the number of elements in a set. For finite sets, cardinality is simply the count of its members. For example, the set {apple, banana, cherry} has a cardinality of 3.

The concept extends to infinite sets as well, where it becomes more complex. Two infinite sets are said to have the same cardinality if there exists a bijection (a one-to-one correspondence) between them. Georg Cantor, a pioneer in set theory, demonstrated that there are different sizes of infinity. The cardinality of the set of natural numbers {1, 2, 3, ...} is denoted by aleph-null ($\aleph_0$) and is the smallest infinite cardinality.

Cantor also proved that the set of real numbers has a larger cardinality than the set of natural numbers. This cardinality is often denoted by $c$ or $2^{\aleph_0}$. The Continuum Hypothesis, which postulates that there is no set with cardinality strictly between that of the natural numbers and the real numbers, remains a significant open problem in mathematics, proven to be independent of the standard axioms of set theory.

In other fields, cardinality can refer to the number of unique values in a column of a database table. High cardinality indicates many unique values, while low cardinality suggests a limited number of repeating values. This has implications for database performance and indexing strategies.
