Carbongas is a term used in some contexts to refer to gases that contain carbon atoms. In practice, it is often applied to carbon-containing gases that are encountered in energy, environmental, and industrial settings. The principal members include carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and various hydrocarbons such as methane (CH4) and higher alkanes (for example, ethane, propane). Some definitions also encompass other carbon-bearing species produced during industrial processes or gasification, such as syngas, a mixture of CO and hydrogen (H2) used as a chemical feedstock.

Sources of carbongases vary. They are released during the combustion of fossil fuels and biomass, as well as from industrial processes and waste decomposition. Methane is widely emitted during natural gas extraction, fossil fuel use, enteric fermentation in ruminant animals, and certain waste treatment operations. CO2 results from respiration and oxidation of carbon-containing fuels, while CO is formed during incomplete combustion when limited oxygen is present.

Environmental and health aspects are central to discussions of carbongases. CO is highly toxic and interferes with the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. CO2 is a major greenhouse gas and a key driver of climate change, influencing global temperatures and weather patterns. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with a high short-term warming potential. Hydrocarbon gases contribute to air quality issues, including smog and ozone formation, depending on atmospheric conditions.

Measurement and management focus on emission inventories, reporting, and mitigation. Strategies include improving combustion efficiency, capturing carbon dioxide for storage or utilization, reducing methane leaks, and adopting processes that minimize the release of carbon-containing gases.
