Cannabinoids are a class of chemical compounds produced by the cannabis plant (*Cannabis sativa*), as well as by the human body and other mammals. They interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, a network of receptors and neurotransmitters that help regulate various physiological processes, including mood, appetite, pain sensation, and immune response.

The most well-known cannabinoids include tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). THC is the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis, responsible for its mind-altering effects, while CBD is non-intoxicating and has been studied for potential therapeutic benefits, such as reducing anxiety, inflammation, and seizures. Other notable cannabinoids include cannabigerol (CBG), cannabichromene (CBC), and cannabinol (CBN), each with distinct properties and potential effects.

The human body naturally produces endocannabinoids, such as anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), which bind to cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) found throughout the nervous and immune systems. CB1 receptors are primarily located in the brain and central nervous system, influencing functions like memory and pain perception, while CB2 receptors are mainly found in immune cells, modulating inflammation and immune responses.

Research on cannabinoids continues to expand, exploring their potential applications in medicine, including pain management, epilepsy treatment, and neuroprotective therapies. However, their use remains regulated in many countries due to concerns over psychoactive effects and legal considerations.
