Camarodonts are a group of carnivorous mammals that lived during the Early to Middle Eocene epoch, which spans from around 56 to 40 million years ago. The name "camarodont" is derived from the Greek words "kamaron," meaning "companion," and "odous," meaning "tooth." This refers to the distinctive dental structure of these mammals, which features a significant amount of prominent cheek teeth.

Camarodonts were among the first groups of mammals to achieve significant sizes, with some species reaching weights of up to 100 kilograms. They were primarily herbivorous, but some species had dental adaptations that suggest a more omnivorous diet. Camarodonts were characterized by their distinctive dental structure, which featured a combination of pointed front teeth and a prominent pair of cheek teeth.

Fossil evidence from the Americas, Europe, and Asia has provided valuable insights into the evolution and behavior of camarodonts. The most well-known genera include Eurotamandua, Engnoconodon, and Carolkeauniqutia. These mammals were likely part of the complex early mammalian ecosystems, coexisting with other groups of mammals, including insectivores, small carnivores, and herbivores.

Taxonomically, camarodonts are classified as a distinct group of mammals within the order Lipotyphla, although some researchers have also placed them within the order Cimolesta. Further study of the dental wear patterns and the uneven distribution of fossil evidence suggests that camarodonts were likely plesiomorphic or were part of an ancestral lineage of modern mammals.
