A calorimetrist is a scientist or technician who specializes in calorimetry, the measurement of heat changes in physical, chemical, and biological processes. Calorimetry provides data on energy release or absorption, reaction energetics, and material properties through controlled experiments and rigorous analysis.

Calorimrist roles span industries: in food science to determine caloric content and energy values; in chemistry and materials science to quantify reaction enthalpies, heat capacities, and phase transitions; in physiology and clinical nutrition to estimate metabolic rate using indirect calorimetry; in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics to study formulation stability and heat effects.

Common instruments include bomb calorimeters for gross energy content of foods or fuels; differential scanning calorimeters for heat flows during phase transitions; isothermal titration calorimeters for binding enthalpies; microcalorimeters and thermal analyzers; indirect calorimetry devices (metabolic carts) for respiratory measurements.

Education and training: typically a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, physics, engineering, food science, or a related field. Many calorimetrist positions require stronger training in thermodynamics, data analysis, statistics, and instrument operation. Advanced roles may require master's or doctoral degrees and experience with instrument calibration, experimental design, and safety. Certifications are not universally required but may be pursued through professional societies.

The term is less common in some regions and the profession may be described as a calorimetry technician or chemist specializing in calorimetry.
