Béllets, also known as belay devices, are essential pieces of safety equipment used in rock climbing, mountaineering, and caving. Their primary function is to manage the climbing rope, allowing a belayer to safely control the rope's movement and arrest a fall. This is achieved by creating friction within the device, which the belayer can then use to secure the climber or lower them.

Tube-style devices, such as the ATC (Air Traffic Controller), are simple and versatile, offering good control for both ascending and rappelling. Assisted-braking devices, like the Petzl Grigri or Black Diamond Pilot, incorporate a mechanism that helps to automatically lock the rope in the event of a fall, providing an added layer of security. Other devices, such as figure-eight descenders, are primarily used for rappelling but can also be used for belaying in specific situations.

Proper use of a belay device is critical. It requires the belayer to maintain control of the brake strand of the rope at all times and to understand how to feed and take in slack effectively. Training and practice under experienced supervision are highly recommended for anyone learning to belay. The correct selection and maintenance of belay devices, along with careful attention to rope management, are fundamental to safe climbing practices.
