Bändäysmenetelmät, or "banding methods" in English, refer to a set of techniques used in various fields, particularly in biology and genetics, to separate and analyze molecules based on their size or other physical properties. These methods are fundamental to many laboratory procedures and have revolutionized our understanding of biological systems.

The most common banding method is gel electrophoresis. In this technique, a gel matrix, typically made of agarose or polyacrylamide, acts as a sieve. Molecules are loaded into wells at one end of the gel and an electric current is applied. Since molecules carry an electrical charge, they migrate through the gel towards the oppositely charged electrode. Smaller molecules move more easily and therefore travel further through the gel matrix than larger molecules, resulting in separation based on size. This creates distinct bands within the gel, each representing a population of molecules of a similar size.

Different types of gel electrophoresis exist, such as pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) for very large DNA molecules, and SDS-PAGE (sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) for proteins, which denatures proteins and separates them based on mass.

Banding methods are crucial for a wide range of applications, including DNA fingerprinting, gene expression analysis, protein purification, and disease diagnosis. The ability to visualize and isolate specific molecular components from complex mixtures has enabled significant advancements in scientific research and biotechnology. The principle of separating components within a matrix is also applied in other contexts, such as chromatography, though gel electrophoresis remains the archetypal banding method in molecular biology.
