Bygningstekniske refers to the technical aspects and disciplines related to buildings, including their design, construction, operation and maintenance. The term covers a broad range of topics that ensure a building is safe, functional, durable and energy-efficient.

The scope includes planning and designing the structural system, building physics, and the performance of building envelopes. It also encompasses technical installations such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning, electrical systems, plumbing and controls. In addition, bygningsfag involves considerations of energy use, indoor climate, acoustics, moisture management, fire safety and safety regulations. Life-cycle aspects, maintenance planning, and the ability to adapt buildings to changing needs are also central.

Fagfolk innen bygningstekniske omfatter ingeniører, arkitekter, entreprenører og andre fagpersoner som samarbeider for å oppfylle krav til funksjon, sikkerhet og holdbarhet. Prosjekterings- og byggprosesser innebærer analyse av belastninger, klima, materialvalg, konstruksjonsmetoder og risikohåndtering, samt kostnadsstyring og tidsplanlegging. Under drift vurderes tetthet, vedlikehold, fuktsikring og energieffektivitet.

I Norge er bygningsteknisk arbeid knyttet til tekniske krav i byggtekniske forskrifter og relevante standarder, for eksempel TEK17 og tilhørende NS- og EN-standarder. Bygningsteknikk er derfor en tverrfaglig disiplin som kobler arkitektur og ingeniørkunst for å sikre trygge, effektive og bærekraftige bygg gjennom hele livsløpet.
