Byggdränering refers to the system of measures taken during the construction of a building to manage groundwater and rainwater. The primary goal is to protect the building's foundation, basement, and lower levels from moisture damage, which can lead to structural issues and mold growth.

The process typically involves several components. Subsurface drainage is crucial, often consisting of perforated pipes laid around the building's foundation at the lowest point. These pipes collect groundwater and direct it away from the structure, usually to a sump pit or a natural drainage area. The pipes are often surrounded by gravel or crushed stone to facilitate water flow and prevent clogging.

Waterproofing membranes are also a key part of byggdränering. These are applied to the exterior walls of the foundation and basement to create a barrier against water penetration. Common materials include asphalt-based coatings, plastic sheets, or specialized membranes.

In addition to subsurface drainage and waterproofing, surface management is important. This includes ensuring proper grading of the land around the building so that rainwater flows away from the foundation, rather than pooling against it. Gutters and downspouts are also part of this, designed to effectively channel roof runoff away from the building's perimeter.
